The project began as a recording outlet led by guitarist and vocalist Xian, who started playing in bands in New Hampshire during the mid-1980s before relocating to Michigan in the mid-’90s and becoming part of Detroit’s underground music community. Between 2019 and 2023, Sunnyside Revival released a series of online-only singles built around collaborations with friends and rotating musicians. During that period, Xian worked closely with Jon Ward of Steel Rail Guitars, whose guitar and handmade lapsteel playing became part of the project’s evolving sound alongside a shifting cast contributing drums, vocals, and additional guitar.

A more permanent lineup began forming in 2023 when longtime friend Brandon joined on saxophone. Bassist Jack, originally from Sydney, Australia’s punk scene, had also settled in Michigan after years in underground bands there and abroad. The lineup was cemented in 2025 with the addition of drummer Brian, completing a group shaped by shared history, chemistry, and a common punk-rock foundation. With the line-up in place, the band launched performances at Trixie’s bar, Livernoise Rogue Porchfest in Ferndale, and Corktown Music Festival 2025 at Nancy Whiskeys.

Beneath the noise, humor, confusion, and late-night energy runs a common thread: the sense that connection, laughter, desire, and being alive with other people still matter, even when the world feels absurd.
